Halloween Video Playlist Part 1

What will you be watching on Halloween? As a ramp up to All Hallows Eve here is the first in a series of suggestions…

If classic science fiction deals with the question, “What if?” then the steam-punk or historical revisionist work amuses itself with, “If only…”

When H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” was published in Weird Tales in 1926, the technology existed to make a silent movie of it, if only anyone had  been so inclined. In 2003, a group of H.P. Lovecraft fanatics; a live action role-playing group called the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society began a two year, self- financed project to turn the original short story into a silent movie. The final film runs 47 minutes and is available on DVD . It is quite simply the best film yet made of a Lovecraft story. Filmed in “Mythoscope” the filmakers shot the special effects using techniques common to films of the silent era. The results are curiously moving even to viewers raised on modern CGI effects. The performances are in keeping with the style of acting from that period. At first you laugh but as the film progresses you start to get into the performances, the pacing and the over-the-top melodramatics. Much like a Lovecraft story, outwardly absurd but inwardly haunting maybe even maddening!  Much like a nightmare!!!

Okay, maybe that’s a bit much but we are talking Lovecraft and like any good horror film, good taste takes a vacation. For the curious here’s the original trailer for the film.

The DVD is available either from the link posted above to the Lovecraft Historical Society or through Microcinema.

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society is currently working on a new project, a talkie! Based on “The Whisperer in Darkness”, it will take its visual cues from classic 1930’s styled film noir. Below is the latest trailer,

And check out this nicely shot teaser.
